Leaving everything behind in pursuit of a one in a million dream is never an easy decision to make. Imbued with a budding love for music from a young age, it wasn’t until midway through her time in college that Rachel Schumacher even thought about making her wildest dreams more than that. During college, Schumacher found herself leaning into music as an outlet to help her through difficult classes, at which point Schumacher realized maybe making music is what just was meant to do. After graduating college Schumacher made the leap and moved to Nashville to give the dream a go, and we had the chance to chat with Schumacher about her brand new single, Maybe I’m Crazy, released this past Friday.
Worlds of Country: When did you know that music was something you wanted to pursue?
Rachel: I’ve always loved music, but it honestly wasn’t until halfway through college that I realized it was what I wanted to pursue as a career. I was feeling very burnt out in school while taking a lot of difficult science classes. I was on a path toward going to veterinary school and just wasn’t happy anymore. I found myself leaning heavily on music and songwriting to get through it, then I finally came to the realization that maybe that’s where I should be focusing my energy.
Worlds of Country: Once you knew, what was your first step towards making this dream a reality?
Rachel: I started going to open mics back home in Missouri so that I could get comfortable on stage and singing in public. Prior to that I had mostly just shared my singing online. Eventually I started getting small acoustic gigs singing at local bars. There really weren’t a ton of venues that did country music, so I started thinking about moving to Nashville. I took several trips down by myself where I played in writers rounds and fell in love with the city. Then this past June after I graduated college, I made the big move.
Worlds of Country: How would you describe your musical style for people that may have never heard you before?
Rachel: I’ve been getting this question a lot and honestly, I feel like I’m still trying to figure out my own sound, but overall, I would describe it as pop country. I am just starting to record and release my own music, so I think it probably has a lot more time to develop.
Worlds of Country: Who would you say most influenced this style?
Rachel: My biggest influence has to be Taylor Swift. I love her early albums and grew up listening to them. I also love a good revenge song, and just recorded one that I’m hoping to release before the end of the year.
Worlds of Country: What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned along this musical journey?
Rachel: One lesson I’ve learned is that it’s never too late to follow your dreams. It sounds cheesy but that was the biggest thing holding me back. I was scared that I was too late to the game. In my eyes I thought that everyone had been singing since they were 5 years old and were so much more prepared than me. I was scared that I was going to move to Nashville and look like an idiot that has no idea what she’s doing. Most of the time I really don’t know what I’m doing, but neither does anybody else. This also leads into another great lesson, to not compare yourself to others. We all have our own unique journeys and sounds. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been singing, how long you’ve been in Nashville, or how many followers you have. We’re all trying to accomplish the same things and it’s not a competition.
Worlds of Country: What’s the story behind your debut single, Maybe I’m Crazy?
Rachel: I wrote this song back when I was starting to realize that I wanted to pursue a career in music. I felt like everybody else thought I was crazy, and I even felt that way about myself. Then I decided to just embrace the fact that maybe I was a little crazy. You kind of have to be in order to make it in this industry.
Worlds of Country: What about this song stood out to you that made you want to make it your first release?
Rachel: It was a tough decision when I thought about what song I wanted to record first, but I decided this was a good intro into who I am. I’ve been playing this song out in public for years now and I feel like it’s finally time to have it out for the world to hear.
Worlds of Country: What’s next for you?
Rachel: I just got done recording another song that I’m hoping to release before the end of the year. I will probably start teasing it right after “Maybe I’m Crazy” comes out so stay tuned for that. Besides that, I just plan on continuing to play as many shows as I can. I love to perform and would love to start traveling to other states for shows as well.
