Shriver’s new single, When He’s Around, is a slight departure from Shriver’s proclivity to write heartbreakers, as on When He’s Around, Shriver shines while delighting in some of life’s brighter moments.

Recently, we had the chance to chat with Shriver about her music journey, new single, and more!

Worlds of Country

When did you know that music was going to be the thing for you?

Gracee

Music has always been a huge part of my family, and especially on my mom’s side at family reunions, it was always country music, we would sit and play our instruments. And I really learned from like my uncles and grandparents. So probably about nine is when I just was like, Mom, I want to be a country music singer. And it kind of took off.

Worlds of Country

What was your first big step towards making this dream a reality?

Gracee

I got my first guitar and then I started playing shows. And then my parents, I wanted to go on a television show so bad. And my parents were like, no, especially my dad, he’s like, I want you to be a kid and all of that stuff. And so I made a deal with them. And he was like, when you’re 16, you can go on a show. And so when I tried out for The Voice, I was 15 and then turned 16 When I got the call back, that I was getting billed to be on the show. So I think that was like my first huge step of like moving forward, I would say for exposure.

Worlds of Country

So what was that experience like, for you in terms of helping you grow as an artist?

Gracee

I think the voice was a super cool experience in the fact that it was kind of like a crash course of the industry, you kind of got to see the highs and lows of things, especially at that age, it was definitely tough at times. That was my senior year of high school. So it was a little bit different than a normal senior year, but I made a lot of friends and I learned a lot.

Worlds of Country

How would you describe your musical style for people that haven’t heard your music?

Gracee

I woild say that if you took like, kind of 80s rock, like a Stevie Nicks vibe, and kind of grungy and then you smashed it with like current stuff on the radio, and my voice is super country, but I definitely have an edge. So it’s like a rock country edge.

Worlds of Country

Your new single, Hhen He’s Around, can you tell us the story behind that song and how that song came together?

Gracee

Yeah, so I was writting with Buddy Owens and Galen Griffin, they’re two songwriters out of Nashville. They’ve had several hits. And people always get on me  because they’re like, you always want to write breakup songs. . And I think I just like to look at other people. I write a lot about my life. But I also write a lot about other people’s lives. And I was in really happy relationship at the time. They’re like, why don’t we write a happy song about like, your happy relationship? So it was about just the good stuff? I was like, okay, yeah, I need to pull from the good stuff. So just about a fun like college girl relationship. That makes you feel giddy, I guess.

Worlds of Country

So, what would you say have been some of the bigger lessons that you’ve learned throughout this journey?

Gracee

I would definitely say not letting no slow you down. You’re going to get a lot of noes. And they’re going to come to you over and over again. And it’s just you got to fight for it because the people that get it are the people that just keep going when no is said to you.

Worlds of Country

What’s nect for you?

Gracee

I live in Nashville right now. I’m going to school at Belmont University. And I’m just doing music like, full time. I do classes Tuesday, Thursday and music all the other days of the week. And I’m just writing and performing. My next big step is honestly just finding the right home. Label wise and right now. It’s been so fun getting to go through the meetings and do all of that. So that’s been great. And honestly just really working on my craft honing in like writing wise, I love to write so I’m doing a lot of that lately.
