It’s incredibly rare to know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life when you’re in the 4th grade. However, Kendal Conrad is the rare exception to this rule, as the musical bug started to take hold and has yet it to loosen it’s grip around Conrad’s lifelong ambitions to this day. Conrad, a Pennsylvania native making trips back and forth to Nashville, brings a fresh and vibrant sound to the modern country scene, citing Taylor Swift and Whitney Houston as formative influences as she pursues the dream she now is privileged to call a career.
Recently we had the chance to chat with Conrad about her musical journey, background, new single, and more!
Worlds of Country: When did you know that you wanted to pursue music?
Kendal: I auditioned for a solo in the 4th grade choir concert and got picked over all of the 5th graders. “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. That was when I decided I wanted to pursue music. It sounds ridiculous that I decided on a career as a 4th grader, but that is the honest truth.
Worlds of Country: Once you knew, what was your first step towards making this dream a reality?
Kendal: I started taking voice lessons! I would enter every talent and karaoke contest. Most of them I lost, but I was performing in front of crowds, which was exciting.
Worlds of Country: How would you describe your musical style?
Kendal: Pop country with a touch of R&B influence.
Worlds of Country:Who would you say most influenced this style?
Kendal: Taylor Swift and Whitney Houston. I learned how to sing by listening to Whitney, and I learned how to write a song from Taylor.
Worlds of Country:What moment of your career are you most proud of so far?
Kendal: I don’t think there is any one moment I am most proud of. There have been so many experiences that have shaped me as a person and as an artist. Living in Nashville, singing with Keith Urban, writing songs with some of my all-time favorite songwriters, pivoting during COVID and becoming a social media influencer, standing on the basketball court to sing the National Anthem for the NBA Washington Wizards… I am so grateful for the wonderful things I’ve gotten to do already, but I don’t think I’ve had my proudest moment yet.
Worlds of Country: What’s the story behind your new single, I Don’t Need You Now?
Kendal: This song is about discovering inner-strength. The guy I adored in high school who never really acknowledged my existence saw me out somewhere years after we had graduated. He wanted to “reconnect” and praised all the cool things I had done recently, like singing with Keith Urban and opening for a bunch of huge country stars. And POOF. Suddenly I was good enough. The irony of it… I didn’t want him anymore. I didn’t need his attention now. I thought I needed it when I was 15, and guess what? I made it through high school just fine without him. I never needed him. I just thought I did.
Worlds of Country: What’s next for you?
Kendal: More gigs, more music, more adventures.
