We’ve all been there, wondering if our feelings are reciprocated or if we’re on the path to a one way relationship and subsequent heartbreak. Madeline Consoer’s new single, “1%” brilliantly explores this paradigm while using a dying phone for added effect. Throughout the song Consoer wonders what her love interest would do if his phone was dying, Consoer wonders whether she’d be the one to get that text letting her know that his phone is dying and that everything is alright. All the while, Consoer knows exactly what she would do, which is to text him, however now she’s stuck waiting to see if he’d do the same.
Recently, we had the chance to chat with Consoer about “1%”, her time on the voice, and so much more.
Worlds Of Country: When did you know that you wanted to pursue music
Madeline I’m pretty sure from a very young age I’ve always wanted to do something with music. I’ve been singing ever since I could remember, and I started songwriting at a pretty young age as well, and that’s what really sparked the fire for me I think. The fact I can write my own songs and relate to so many people through this art form is what really keeps me going.
Worlds Of Country: Once you knew music was something you wanted to pursue, what was your first step towards making it reality?
Madeline I really took that first big step toward my goals at the age of 20. I dropped out of college, very suddenly, and decided to move to Nashville. I’m very lucky to have parents who supported me throughout that entire decision process.. but it was still a very scary experience. I was so young, and had never really left my small town before that. Being on your own in a new city is intimidating, especially in MUSIC city.
Worlds Of Country: How did you feel your time on The Voice has allowed you to grow as an artist?
Madeline: My time on The Voice helped me grow quickly! In that short period of time I learned so much about my own voice; how to stretch it and work it in different ways, and how to get outside my comfort zones with different genres. The vocal coach we got to work with (aka the best ever Trelawny) was the best I’ve ever gotten to experience. She helped me improve so many things, but mainly my confidence on stage. If I could take one thing away from The Voice that will stick with me forever, it would be that my confidence on stage, and the way I use my emotions to get the storyline of a song across, will never be the same.
Worlds Of Country: How would you describe your musical style?
Madeline: I’d say hands down I’m a country music artist. The way I write songs and put them together always tells a story, and I think that’s what sets country music apart from everything else. I’d say I’m a little more on the pop side of course, but in some of my other songs (coming in sept/oct!!), there’s definitely a little bit of a rock influence in there as well. I’m inspired by so many different genres of music that I don’t think there will ever be ONE solid answer for me to this question.
Worlds Of Country: What’s the story behind your new single “1%”?
Madeline: 1% is about something we have ALL gone through I believe. I know that I am always the person who forgets to charge their phone, so I’m left with a dead battery at the end of the night. I wrote this song with Sammy Arriaga and Emma Lynn White.. and Sammy came in with that exact hook idea, “if your phone’s at 1%, who you gonna text?”… and I was obsessed. On a deeper level, it’s about liking someone and hoping that they feel the same about you. If your phone was dying and all you wanted was to text or call them, because you think about that person all the time, you’d hope you were on their mind, and they’d want to reach out to you as well if they were in the same situation. It’s a cute little spin on a love song 🙂
Worlds Of Country: What’s next for you?
Madeline:I feel like after The Voice I was nervous to release music. I felt like there were maybe high expectations, and I wouldn’t quite live up to them. I’ve now gotten that crazy notion out of my head, and I’ve been working my butt off behind the scenes, and have A LOT of new music to share with you all. Aug 27th marks the release of 1% (which I’m over the moon excited for).. I have a pretty cool collaboration with another artist coming out mid september, and then I’m releasing an outside song in early October that was shown to me, and I absolutely fell in love with. You can expect a lot of new music, and definitely a lot more traveling with some shows so I can get to know everyone a little bit more!
