Finding a true, authentic voice is one of the biggest challenges new artists face. Often times newer artists find themselves chasing trends and attempting emulated the era’s biggest stars. For Devon Beck finding her new and true musical direction took taking time away from music to truly find herself. After taking the time necessary, Beck came back and released her latest single “mirrors” which sonically can only be described as uniquely Devon Beck.
Recently, we had the chance to chat with Devon about her musical influences, musical style and so much more!
Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?
Some of my biggest musical influences would probably be the musicians back home that took the time to give me advice, teach me guitar, taught me what to, and what not to do.. just the people that helped shape me into the musician I am today. I hope one day I can pay it forward to another starting musician.
When did you know music was the path you wanted to take with your life?
I knew I wanted to pursue music when I started playing open mics back when I was 16.. people I had just met, went above and beyond to help me out and just believed in me. They showed me that you can make a career out of music and ever since, I’ve been chasing that dream.
Once you knew, what was your first step towards making it a reality?
My first step to making it a reality was, when I began going from open mics to playing gigs. I wanted to work hard and make the people back home proud.
What have been some of your biggest challenges along the way?
I would say my biggest challenges would be finding out my path in the industry. I had a couple set backs in the last year, and had to take that year to myself to figure out my next move and my next direction. ‘Mirrors’ is that new direction.
What’s the story behind your new song, “Mirrors”?
The story behind ‘Mirrors’ is finding my new direction, after a few set backs and being around people who didn’t have my best interest at heart. This song is about being aware and learning from my mistakes.
What’s next for you?
Next, I’m hoping I can keep releasing music and sharing my stories through songwriting.
