Hailing from a small town in Minnesota, music has always inspired Dariann Leigh. From a young age Leigh knew that this was the only path she could envision herself following. Leigh, now living the dream, is on the verge of releasing a new single “Let Me Go” which she describes as a turning point in her journey.
Recently we had the chance to chat with Dariann about her upcoming single, future plans and whether a move to Nashville is in the cards.
Worlds Of Country: Who would you describe as your biggest musical influences?
Dariann: That would Johnny Cash, Shania Twain and more recently adding Carly Pearce, Maren Morris and Kacey Musgraves.
Worlds Of Country: Did you always know that music was the path you wanted to take?
Dariann: Growing up I struggled in school a lot so I used music to learn everything from spelling to math to you name it. I wrote music all the time and it has always been something that I was very into. As I neared graduating high school it just became clear to me that this was what I wanted to do with my life.
Worlds Of Country: Once you knew you wanted to pursue music what was your first step to making the dream a reality?
Dariann: For me it was getting out and playing as many shows as I could. I had played shows in highschool but I wanted to play bigger shows with more people and bands. Then it was to get down to Nashville to record my debut EP and single and this all happened in a really short period of time.
Worlds Of Country: Were you always confident on stage?
Dariann: For me it’s weird because I grew up in theatre and I didn’t do much choir, I was in it in elementary school and then rejoined in high school. I think being in choir growing up instilled a confidence in me especially on bigger stages, I still get very nervous when I sing the national anthem, I usually have to hold the mic with two hands, but other than that I’ve got it down.
Worlds Of Country: Are you living in Nashville now?
Dariann: I’m currently in Minnesota but planning a move to Nashville!
Worlds Of Country: Do you have a time frame for this move?
Dariann: It’s really any time right now. Right now I’m just looking for the best time which to me is always the current time.
Worlds Country: What’s the process to put out music while being outside of Nashville?
Dariann: It’s been really interesting, obviously there’s a bit of a separation with all of the miles but being home keeps it fun just being able to see all the hometown love and how they feel about my songs. I’m definitely looking forward to releasing music while actually being in Nashville though. Hopefully soon!
Worlds Of Country: Can you tell us the story behind your upcoming song “Let Me Go”?
Dariann: I wrote this song last February, we were just sitting down in the room and talking about our lives and the ex-boyfriends and people we’ve dated in the past, and we got into talking about things we didn’t like about previous relationships and maybe would even consider toxic. We started listing all these things and put them in a song. The theme was really that when you’re in those toxic spaces you just want to be let go to move to the next phase of your life.
We came up with “Let Me Go” being the big chorus hit. We walked up to my producer after the write and he was like “yep, we’re recording this in two days”.
Worlds Of Country: This sounds like a song that is very special to you. What’s been like waiting over a year for it to finally be released?
Dariann: It’s been a whole year of being anxious and antsy to get it out. It’s something that I’m really proud of. I feel like I really honed in on my sound and where I want my sound to go. I know it will change over time but this where I’m at right now and I can’t wait for it to finally be out and I can play more than just an acoustic version for people.
Worlds Of Country: How do you feel your sound differs on this song from what you’ve put out previously?
Dariann: For me it’s a whole different level of confidence. I feel you hear my voice more on this song than anything else I’ve released. It’s a different pride because this last year I’ve released music that was written by different people, so there is an extra level of pride being more involved in the process with this one. I feel like there’s an extra confidence and that I’ve finally found the lane that I fit best in.
Worlds Of Country: Do you feel your growth as a writer has helped you grow as an artist?
Dariann: Absolutely! I feel that writing and artistry go hand in hand, especially when it comes to life circumstances and you grow more and you mature more and everything starts to grow together.
